Hannelie Coetzee is a Johannesburg-based visual artist and researcher whose practice sits at the intersection of environmental science and social activism. As an honorary fellow at the Global Change Institute, she creates site-specific, “relational” artworks designed to foster empathy for the natural world.
Her work frequently utilizes reclaimed industrial materials, like mining core and stone, to create large-scale public mosaics and sculptures. By collaborating with scientists and urban planners, Coetzee transforms ecological data into tangible interventions that address climate change. Whether through ephemeral performance burns or permanent urban installations, her art serves as a catalyst for environmental stewardship and community engagement.
